Finding Comfort and Strength in the Promises of Psalm 91

Finding Comfort and Strength in the Promises of Psalm 91

Life Lesson 44: I’m embracing the journey of dwelling in God’s presence, where I find unshakable security and peace.

Psalm 91, a chapter that speaks directly to each of us, is one of the most reassuring passages in the Bible. It offers profound comfort and a vivid portrayal of the security that our faith in God provides. We can all find solace and strength by studying and embracing its promises, knowing that they are not just for others but for us personally.

As we reflect on the key themes of Psalm 91 (NKJV), it becomes evident how this chapter deeply reassures and comforts each believer individually. Let’s dive right into its promises tailored to each of us.

The Promise of the Lord’s Presence – “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust” (vv. 1, 2).

Even when you feel alone, you are never truly alone. God is always with you. He is omnipresent, which means wherever we are, God’s presence is with us.

The Promise of the Lord’s Protection – “Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings, you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler” (vv. 3, 4).

Because God is ever-present, we need not be afraid to take initiative or even risk. His protection is not limited to certain situations or places but extends to wherever we are and whatever we do. This all-encompassing protection should fill us with a deep sense of security and safety.

The Promise of the Lord’s Peace – You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday” (vv. 5, 6).

It’s easy to feel intimidated and insecure in the face of the unknown or unfamiliar. However, remembering that God is our refuge allows His peace to rule in our hearts as we journey with Him through life. This promise of peace should encourage us, even in the most challenging times.

The Promise of the Lord’s Perspective – “A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look and see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;” (vv. 7-10).

We find stability when we adopt a heavenly perspective on life and circumstances. This stability is crucial when we face disturbing news like our health, relationships, or finances. Seeing these issues from God’s point of view is reassuring and aligns us with His eternal plans for our lives.

The Promise of the Lord’s Provision –  “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands, they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot” (vv. 11-13).

Everything we have and will ever own comes from our heavenly Father. As James 1:17 NIV states, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” Whether you believe in Jesus or not, everything you possess is from the same God you have rejected or refuse to accept. God shows no partiality (2:11 NKJV) and will meet all our needs, providing for us abundantly and without reservation.

The Promise of the Lord’s Power – “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation” (vv. 14-16).

We all have goals and sometimes we even struggle to achieve them. When we encounter hardships while pursuing our God-given goals, we must remember that God, in His omniscience, has the power to deliver and help us reach our objectives. You have the most powerful ally with God, and the Bible tells us that His sovereignty rules over all (Psalm 103:19 NKJV). His power is not just a concept but a force that can propel us towards His eternal purpose for us.

May this chapter encourages us all to rely on God’s unwavering support, providing stability and peace in every aspect of our lives.
